How COVID-19 Helps Death Row Inmates

While the Coronavirus Hurts Many, It Helps Some

COVID-19 has taken hundreds of thousands of lives around the globe. Every day, you may read a new coronavirus update regarding new cases, possible cures and cities reopening. But have you heard about how COVID-19 is helping prisoners on death row live a little longer?

While this is a significant victory for some, numerous prisoners across the nation are still awaiting their execution, and a large number of them have been on death row for years. With COVID-19’s threat to public health, however, many executions were postponed and trials involving the death penalty are delayed until it’s safe to proceed.

Who Is Being Helped?

In Texas, two prisoners’ executions were rescheduled “ … in light of the current health crisis and the enormous resources needed to address that emergency.” “Enormous resources” refers to the death penalty drugs being used to help treat COVID-19. This shocking but true fact is what’s helping these two men exist on this Earth for longer. Four other Texas inmates’ executions were stayed until further notice, allowing a total of six Texas inmates to stay alive for the time being.

In Tennessee, two prisoners’ executions were granted stays until 2021 due to COVID-19. One prisoner’s attorney argues that COVID-19 impacted their ability to prepare a clemency case on behalf of their client. This inmate was supposed to be executed on June 4, 2020, but now remains alive until his stay expires on February 4, 2020. The second death row prisoner was scheduled to be executed in October 2020 but was granted a stay until April 2021.

Regardless of whether you support or oppose the death penalty, it’s fair to argue that COVID-19 has allowed some prisoners to live longer than they expected. With court schedule delays and health concerns impeding the justice system, inmates are simply protecting themselves as best they can under these circumstances. Remember, they deserve certain protections under the law despite their criminal status.
